Based on the true story of Seaman Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke), who is sent to Navy Psychiatrist Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington) to assess his violent outbursts. Through their meetings we are shown the hard life Fisher has lived and how he is taught to face his past, while forming a close friendship with Jerome.

There is great scepticism about how much truth actually made it into this story (which Antwone Fisher wrote himself), but the film is excellent. Denzel Washington, in his first directorial role, does a fine job and much credit for this film's success must go to newcomer Derek Luke, who was discovered in the Sony Pictures gift shop. This is a great film of success over adversity no matter how much is based on true events.
