JACOB ZHIVOV
Aging and drug addicted, former thief Bob (Nick Nolte)
is convinced to return to his former ways by robbing a casino in Monte
Carlo. To ensure that Roger (Tchéky Karyo), a police officer
doesn't catch on, Bob has developed a plan to have two heists running
simultaneously -- a real one and a fake one.
I liked this film, the heist is interesting and our
main character isn't perfect. This film had a very European film making
vibe and focuses on the characters involved in the heist rather than
the heist itself, unlike other recent casino robbing film Ocean's
Eleven. Nick Nolte is excellent as Bob but then again this character
is much like himself -- aging and drug dependent. Tchéky Karyo
plays a good supporting role as Roger, a cop who would rather save
Bob than arrest him.
The Good Thief is an excellent English remake of the
original French film, which is rare in cinema history.
DAVID BLUMENSTEIN
I agree, Margaret. The Good Thief is good indeed.
COUGH COUGH SPLUTTER SHRIEEEEEEK!!!
Sorry -- I was infested with the spirit of David
Stratton. It flares up occasionally, and creams only work some
of the time.
Actually, The Good Thief is good. My favourite
part is Vladimer, the 1337 h4x0r techno-wiz, played by Emir Kusturica.
Unlike the techno-wizzes in most heist movies (and all movies, really),
Vladimer resembles a real character rather than an annoying fucking
stereotype in crap glasses. Vladimer plays guitar and designs security
systems. Vladimer is cool. Nick Nolte is cool too. Nutsa Kukhianidze
is hot.
This is an interesting film. Go see it on a Friday night.
If there's a 3am session anywhere, see it then.
THE GOOD THIEF stars Nick Nolte, Tchéky Karyo
and Introducing Nutsa Kukhianidze. It is rated MA and is 120 minutes
long. It is currently playing in Melbourne at Cinema Nova, the Kino
Dendy, the George Palace, the Rivoli and at selected super-corpo megaplex
cinemas.
