Have you ever caught one of the '60s romantic comedies
on Sunday afternoon Television and gone "that's funny"?
Well, if you have you're going to really enjoy Down with Love. If
you haven't you'll enjoy it as well.
The year is 1962. Barbara Novak (Renee Zellweger) has
just come down from Maine to New York after writing a book called
Down With Love. The book instructs women to have sex the way a man
does, and to detach oneself from love completely. The success of this
book leads women to follow in Barbara's footsteps and rebel against
men. Catcher Block (Ewan McGregor), successful journalist for men's
magazine KNOW / ladies man / man's man / man about town, decides to
take Barbara down. He does this by disguising himself as naive astronaut,
Zip Martin, to get her to admit that she indeed is not a Down with
Love girl.
This film did not suck like I thought it would (romantic
comedies are like shooting fish in a barrel). This film works because
it takes the piss out of all the '60s romantic comedies, which leads
to better humour and enjoyment over the other romantic comedies we
see.
Look out for the complete '60s treatment over this film
including the old 20th Century Fox logo and introduction to films
of that era.
DAVID BLUMENSTEIN
NARC kicked my ass. NARC is a cop movie. NARC has busts
and stakeouts and corruption. NARC has good drama and tension and
twists. NARC has Ray Liotta and Jason Patric, which is a good thing.
NARC has rappers in it, but they can act. NARC is filmed in an offbeat
way and contains flashbacks, but they are not zippy and flashy so
you think to yourself, "Oh my, how zippy and flashy these cuts
and flashbacks are".
NARC is worth seeing. DARK BLUE is also worth seeing,
but DARK BLUE is a movie whereas NARC is a film. So see both of them
and let them kick your ass.
